A veteran incumbent member of Congress faced an apparently strong challenge from a political neophyte running a populist campaign. The challenger presented himself as an outsider untainted by Washington with the kind of business experience needed in the nation’s capital. Our research revealed the challenger to be a professional influence-peddler: a top-dollar lobbyist, a Registered Foreign Agent for dozens of clients – including foreign governments – and a longtime D.C. attorney who had presided over the bankruptcy of a prestigious law firm. The resulting media campaign deprived the challenger of his single strongest issue, destroyed his credibility and forced him on the defensive for the entirety of the campaign. Our client was convincingly re-elected.
